Vaginal discharge that is dark or even black or discolored is a common condition and should not raise concern if no other symptoms are present.

Remains of the old endometrial tissues can lead to black vaginal discharge – kind of cleaning process of the uterus by letting out the older tissues for newer ones.

Endometriosis is pretty common disease among women – it is the growth of endometrial cells (similar to those that form the inside lining of the uterus) in unusual locations outside of the uterus. Endometrial cells are the same cells that are shed each month during menstruation. These cells of endometriosis attach themselves to tissue outside the uterus and are called endometriosis implants.

These implants are most commonly found on ovaries, Fallopian tubes, outer surfaces of the uterus or intestines and on the surface lining of pelvic cavity. They can also be found in vagina, cervix, on bladder, although less commonly than other locations in the pelvis.

Endometriosis of vagina and cervix can be a reason for black vaginal discharge before and/or after period.

Vaginal is important part of reproductive system – it is a canal that joins the cervix (the lower part of uterus) to the outside of the body. As vagina is open part of reproductive system, it can be infected or damaged more often (especially in cases of multiple partners). There are several vaginal diseases which can cause black vaginal discharge – erosion, polyps, vaginitis, cervicitis and local trauma.
