Brown discharge between periods can be indicative of serious health problems for some women but at the same time it could be just very simple temporary “hormonal storm” – let’s find out what causes this brown discharge between periods.

Brown Discharge between periods is one of common concerns of girls and women. Not all cases of brown vaginal discharge are cause for concern. Brown vaginal discharge between periods is most often associated with old endometrial tissues.

Once you start puberty a white and/or clear discharge is normal. The vagina is self-cleaning. This same discharge increases the closer you get to ovulation and when you are sexually aroused. You can have this normal discharge for weeks, months or even years before getting your first period. It will also continue after you get your period. Sometimes you can have few times brown discharge before your first period. Your first period can look like this also.

Brown discharge?

If your period is late you might get a brown, rather than red, discharge. It could also mean that for whatever reason during your last menses the entire uterine lining failed to make a timely exit. Brown Discharge may happen right after periods, and is just “cleaning out” your vagina. Old blood looks brown. This may occur when you are ovulating in the middle of menstrual cycle.

Brown vaginal discharge between periods can also be a symptom of a medical concern that is much more sinister than leftover endometrial cells. Some of these conditions include Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID), menopause, sexually transmitted diseases (gonorrhea, Chlamydia or genital warts) or cervical cancer.

Brown vaginal discharge between periods could be a result of dysfunctional endometrial elimination (hormonal dysfunctions).

Each of the other conditions mentioned have much more noticeable symptoms of their own in addition to brown discharge. Some of typical additional to brown discharge symptoms are: pain, discharge that is watery or yellowish, depression, vaginal dryness, pain during intercourse, frequent urination, infertility, dysfunctional uterine bleeding, burning, itching, rash, hot to touch, mouth ulcers, and loss of appetite.

If the cause of the brown vaginal discharge between periods is simply old uterine cells, then the treatment may be simple life style suggestions such as better nutrition, regular exercise and drinking more water. If you discover that the brown discharge is a result of another condition, better visit your doctor.

  1. This is happening to me and I am going to get checked for diseases right now but should I also see a doctor?

    • meeting with gynecologist could be very useful

  2. I had my 4th baby a yr ago via C-Section, and had my tubes tied at that time as well. Since then I have had a period pretty much on time but with LARGE golf ball sized clots, and TONS of brown thick discharge in between. Is this due to the tubal I had done? Or is it something else? I have no pain with the discharge but bad cramping during cycle. No foul smells neither as I am a pretty tidy person.

    • most probably it is increased levels of estrogen (after baby) and your endometrium (internal line of uterus) is becoming thicker and all coming out during periods; C-Section also can contribute – from inside the scar is “refusing” grow of endometrium which is coming out during menstruation.

  3. I have brown discharge between period. My last period in May was late. Then, this month of June I notice that there is a brown discharge. Is there something to worry about? Help please.

  4. I had my 4th baby by c-section a year ago last week and breastfed her up to 2 months ago where I have had 2 periods since stopping,I decided to go on the pill so when my last period started i started taking the mini pill but after 3 days I stopped as i was bleeding so heavy I couldn’t have a super plus tampax in for half an hour without it leaking through and I was feeling awful sweats, chills ect so day number 4 I didnt take, I bled for another 3 days and then it stopped but a week later I have started to get brown/blackish discharge on and off! is this normal?

    • it is side effect of stopped hormonal contraception – it works like “hormonal miscarriage” – better not use any hormonal contraception until you have at least 3-4 normal periods – for you best could be condom or IUD –

  5. I have brown to black to yellow discharge and have had it for a couple months 24/7 between periods. I think it may be from coming off of the depo shot and not having periods for two years but i dont know. Help?
