Reduce cancer risks
During last decades cancer cases are increasing. It can be explained by improved diagnostic technologies but also it could be explained by other factors such us unhealthy nutrition, bad habits, chemicals, etc. The question is how to reduce cancer risks and is it possible to reduce cancer risks for individuals?
Cancer at a glance
- Cancer is an abnormal growth of cells – instead of normal cells replacement (replacing old cells that die) the process going wrong and body develops and multiply cancerous cells;
- Cancer is not just one disease but many diseases – there are more than 100 different types of cancer including breast cancer, skin cancer, lung cancer, colon cancer, prostate cancer, and lymphoma;
- Cancerous cells can invade nearby tissues and spread to other parts of the body damaging vital organs;
- The spread of cancer from one part of the body to another is called metastasis;
- Cancer is among the leading causes of death worldwide;
- The number of new cancer cases will rise to 22 million within the next two decades.
Reduce cancer risks – new approaches
It was already noted that certain foods can trigger cancer development. At the same time, hundreds of scientific experiments confirm existence of anticancer nutrients and anticancer foods. According to health experts, anticancer diet and certain healthy foods can prevent cancer development. It is a great opportunity for each person to reduce cancer risks just by consuming “right” foods and by developing healthy eating habits.
Most important components of anticancer foods are antioxidants and anticancer phytonutrients. Antioxidants are able to protect body cells from free radicals, harmful oxygen molecules thought to damage cells that result in cancer development. At the same time, antioxidants promote apoptosis (so called “cancer cells suicide”), preventing cancer grow and spreading. Concerning phytonutrients, they protect cell damage and mutations – playing very important role in cancer prevention by causing cancer cells to die (so called “apoptosis”) and by repairing DNA damages caused by different vulnerable factors.
Reduce cancer risks – five best anticancer foods
Garlic is an excellent source of Vitamin B, selenium, Vitamin C, manganese, calcium, phosphorus, iron, potassium and copper. Garlic has a unique combination of sulfur containing nutrients and flavonoids which is quite important for health. The main medical property in garlic is so called “allicin” which has antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal and antioxidant functions. Garlic’s natural properties are able to stop the formation of cancer-causing substances, speed DNA repair and kill cancerous cells.
It is very important to use raw pressed or chopped garlic (1-2 cloves per day) during first 20 minutes preferably on an empty stomach. This activates enzymes and releases that sulfur compounds that offer the most protection. Cooked garlic loses a significant amount of its useful qualities.
Reduce cancer risks
Broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables contain phytochemicals (so called “glucosinolates”) which produce protective enzymes. At the same time, these vegetables help keeping whole body less acidic which is crucial not only for fighting cancerous cells but also for prevention of recurrences. It is well known that cancer cells like acidic environment and anticancer alkaline diet is strongly recommended.
Broccoli is the best source of sulforaphane, which might reduce cancer risk by detoxifying harmful substances. Broccoli is most protective against mouth, esophagus and stomach cancers.
According to recent studies, broccoli can be particularly beneficial for hormone-sensitive tumors such as breast cancer and uterine cancer, since broccoli removes extra estrogen from the body.
Tomatoes are the potential weapon against several types of cancer. Tomato’s antioxidant “lycopene” is effective against prostate cancer, stomach cancer, rectum cancer, cervical cancer, breast cancer and mouth cancer. Actually tomato’s antioxidants seek and neutralize cancer-causing free radicals and slow the growth of cancerous cells. It was noted that cooked tomatoes produce even more lycopene.
Tomato’s phytochemical boosts the immune system and may stop the growth of tumors by interfering with abnormal cell growth.
Berries naturally super rich in antioxidants are able to fight free radicals responsible not only for aging but also for development of several serious diseases including cancer. Berry extracts (especially strawberries and black raspberries) help slow the growth of cancerous cells.
Spinach is a great cancer fighter. Spinach is full of anticancer phytonutrients that can remove dangerous free radicals from the body before damage takes place.
According to health experts, cancers of the mouth, esophagus and stomach can be prevented by eating spinach and similar dark leafy greens on regular basis.
Spinach folate and fiber may reduce the risk for cancers by producing new cells and repairing DNA.
