Many women mention brown discharge after using emergency contraception. Morning After Pills are well known effective emergency contraception pills which are used by women in following cases:
If she had unprotected sex (without any contraception);
If the condom has broken or slipped off;
If she had inadequate cover on the birth control pills (missed pills, taking antibiotics, had some diarrhoea or vomiting);
“Withdrawal” is used as a “method” of contraception (the man withdraws his penis before he ejaculates/cums inside the vagina. Some of the pre-ejaculatory fluid may contain sperm. Therefore this is an unreliable method).
Morning after pills are effective up to 90-95% if used during 72 hours after unprotected sex. Earlier use is more effective.
Brown discharge and/or brown spotting are pretty common side effects of morning after pills. Some women could have brown discharge/spotting or bleeding within the first week of taking morning after pills. Most women will have their next period within seven days of when it is usually due.
Recommendations for women who suffer brown discharge after Morning after Pills:
Just don’t panic and be patient. Brown discharge is pretty common after morning after pills. Wear a panty liner or a light maxi pad – use unscented panty liners or pads;
If the brown vaginal discharge has a strong odor, it could be a sign of an infection other than Pelvic Inflammatory Disease. Visit your doctor immediately;
Take care of vaginal hygiene – keep the area clean. Regular baths or showers will help you feel fresh and clean. Do not use harsh soaps on the genital area. Use a fragrance-free soap or body wash;
If you are fed up of brown vaginal discharge, better visit your doctor for advice.

Please, I took the postinor2 on 19th April 2015. After then have being seeing this brownish discharge on my underpant till dat. Am scare about this issue. Pls help mi
don’t worry – postinor has high doses of hormones and it can temporary mess your own hormonal cycle – it is just side effect of postinor – just be patient, it will end itself; important to know that it is not recommended to use emergency contraception often because it could damage your menstrual cycle
I had sex with my boyfriend about 5 days ago and the condom broke so I took the morning after pill that day. I am now having brown discharge… Am I pregnant?
you are not pregnant – usually morning after pills mess the cycle (side effect)
Had sex last Friday May 22 took the pill same day spotted on that Sunday and nothing happened since. I’m I pregnant
everything depends on which day of your cycle you had unprotected sex and which kind of pill you used;
if you are taking your ordinary every day birth control pill – you cannot be pregnant;
if you took morning after pills (Plan B) – it is just side effect
My girlfriend took prostnor 2 and a week latter she sees this brown dischargewith mild lower abdmnal pains
if you mean “postinor”, it is emergency contraception and brown discharge+abdominal pain are side effects (very typical) – discover more side effects in – http://www.women-info.com/en/emergency-contraception/
Hey, I had the same thing. Did she got her period?
Hi I had my baby on may 22 I had sex 6 days ago and I took Ella on that same morning could I get pregnant
chances for pregnancy are 0.0001%
I took Take Action four days after having sex using the withdrawal method, while already on my period. My period is over and now I am having brown discharge. Should I be paying closer attention? No protection was used, but intercouse lasted under two minutes.
First of all, emergency contraception is effective only during 72 hours (3 days!) after unprotected sex and it was useless to take pills after 4 days;
Second, taken pills could provoke brown discharge; sometimes they can change all cycle.
I have used an emergency contraception for the third time due to no other choice.. I have brown discharge, and today am experiencing very slight cramps. It has somewhat of a smelly odor, and I’m pretty emotional. I’m still 15 days from when my normal period should be. I’m also incredibly stressed so I don’t know if that could be the issue. But should I be concerned?
it is typical side effect from emergency contraception
I had unprotected sex 15 days after my period and I took postinor2 in 48hrs wat are my chances,will I get pregnant? Am suppose 2 c my period 10th of dis month not seen it yet
postinor is pretty effective and chances for pregnancy are about 0.5-1% – at the same time you should know that postinor can change your menstrual cycle
So a couple weeks back, me and my boyfriend had sex, we then found out the condom broke up we aren’t sure if it was during or after. I had just gotten off my period two days prior and I took the morning after pill the next day. Now I have this dark brown discharge and I’m concerned. What should I do? Should I be worried? Any advice?
if you already had period (which means you are not pregnant) why you took morning after pills? Anyway, it could be side effect of this pill
My partner and I had a heavy make out session. We were touching and rubbing each other’s genitals. He also put his finger inside me. We did not do it all the way. I just got scared of the thought that I could get pregnant (which is possible). We did this on July 25 and I am supposed to have my period on the 27th or 28th. On July 27, I took the morning after pill available in my country. I did not had my period on that week. Now, I am having a few drops of brown blood discharge. I am confused if this is a sign of pregnancy or side effects of the pill I took. Please help me clear my mind. Thank you!
if you had sex on 25 and period expecting day was 27, it means you had sex on not-fertile day and chances for pregnancy are very-very low (1-2%); morning after pills can change your cycle; check your fertile and safe days for future in – http://www.women-info.com/en/fertile-days/
Thank you for replying Dr. Doly. I had my ‘period’ yesterday, although I am not that sure if it is my period. Because, it becomes heavy then now it is lighter. Is this period or the thing they call ‘implantation bleeding’? Thank you!

Hi. On 7 July my boyfriend and I had sex. The condom slipped off. My next period was due 25 July. After it happened I took norlevo within 8 hours of the incident. On the 17th July I got a very light period which lasted 9 days. Is this normal, when should I expect my next menstrual cycle? My menstrual cycle is every 28 days.
in most cases morning after pills are messing menstrual cycle; most probably your next period will be normal
Normally, the brown discharge will continue how many days?
all women are different and hormones also different – it means there is no NORMAL for everybody
I took a morning after pill and bled for a while. But now that it’s over (it’s been about a week) I’m seeing brown discharge.
it is side effect of morning after pills – see more side effects in – http://www.women-info.com/en/emergency-contraception/
