Brown spotting causes

Most healthy women experience normal vaginal discharge that varies throughout the menstrual cycle and it can be changed from puberty to menopause. Every day vaginal cells produce normal bacteria and fluids and the volume of normal vaginal discharge is estimated about one teaspoon per day. Healthy vaginal discharge is normally odorless, white and/or transparent, thick and/or thin. If you are experiencing brown vaginal discharge or spotting, you better discover all possible brown spotting causes. Anyway, vaginal discharge color changes always have reasons and if it is accompanied by other symptoms such as a foul odor, itching, discomfort, pain, rash or sores, prompt medical attention is recommended.

Brown spotting is most often associated with old endometrial tissues – could be remains of your last period, could be damages (by infection or other diseases) endometrial cells, could be endometrium changed by hormones, medications, pregnancy or other conditions.

In some cases brown spotting could be a reason for concern (cervical cancer, ovarian cancer, sexually transmitted diseases, etc.)

Brown spotting causes

Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
Possible symptoms – history of pelvic infection, abdominal pain, possible high temperature, loss of appetite, fertility problems (infertility), pain during vaginal test and/or vaginal intercourse and brown vaginal spotting.

Genital warts (HPV)
Possible symptoms – history of unprotected sex, vaginal lump, cauliflower-like mass, vaginal itching, rash on genitals and brown vaginal spotting.

Gonorrhea
Possible symptoms – history of unprotected sex, pain, mouth lesions, feels hot to touch, yellow vaginal discharge and brown vaginal spotting.

Chlamydia
Possible symptoms – loss of appetite, weight loss, discharge from anus, vaginal discomfort, fertility problems (infertility) and brown vaginal spotting.

Vulvovaginitis
Possible symptoms – pain in urethra, yellow vaginal discharge, vaginal dryness and brown vaginal spotting.

Menopause
Possible symptoms – age after 45, pain in urethra, yellow vaginal discharge, vaginal dryness and brown vaginal spotting.

Hormonal dysfunctions
Possible symptoms – vaginal bleeding between periods, obesity, irregular periods, weight change and brown vaginal spotting.

Brown spotting causes

Endometriosis
Possible symptoms – very painful periods, fertility problems (infertility) and Spotting and/or brown vaginal discharge before and after menstrual period.

Pregnancy
Possible symptoms – missed period, pregnancy typical symptoms, history of unprotected sex and unexpected brown vaginal spotting instead of period.

Missed birth control pills
Possible symptoms – birth control pills user, history of missed pills and chaotic spotting and/or brown vaginal discharge.

Stress
Possible symptoms – chronic stress, irritation, sleeping problems, increased sensitivity and chaotic brown spotting.

Benign tumors (cysts, polyps, fibroid)
Possible symptoms – diagnosed cysts, polyps and/or fibroids and brown vaginal spotting (often after intercourse).

Intrauterine devices (IUDs)
Possible symptoms – local infection or inflammation caused by the IUD, vaginal infections and chaotic brown spotting.

Cervical cancer
Possible symptoms – unexpected weight loss, weakness, pain during intercourse, vaginal discharge, vaginal discomfort or pain and brown vaginal spotting.

Medications
Some medications can change the color of menstrual blood or trigger some unexpected brown spotting. This is especially true if woman is taking birth control pills or injectable steroids.

It was also noted that some other medications could be a reason for unexpected brown spotting:

  • azithromycin, Zithromax, Zmax
  • clindamycin phosphate cream – vaginal, Cleocin
  • fluconazole, Diflucan
  • metronidazole, Flagyl
  • miconazole, Monistat; Femizol; Vagistat; M-Zole; Micatin; Lotrimin
  • nystatin/metronidazole-vaginal cream
  • nystatin/metronidazole-vaginal insert
  • terconazole, Terazol, Zazole
