Unfortunately stress is almost permanent component of our life. Sometimes we even don’t realize that our body is experiencing positive stress (so called “eustress”) or negative stress (so called “distress”) including love, danger, fear, abuse, exams, conflicts, work, personal relations, misunderstandings, fight, sadness, diseases, death, eating disorders, dieting, drug use and even increased use of caffeine and alcohol which are interpreted by the body as kind of stress. How women body reply to all stressful situations? Actually the main response is hormonal which can trigger additional brown spotting stress.
When we are under stress, our adrenal glands are designed to produce the hormone called stress hormones (cortisol, adrenaline and noradrenaline) which have direct impact on the sex hormones (mainly estrogens and progesterone). Estrogens and progesterone are responsible for development of the endometrium (internal lining of the uterus). Sex hormones are also responsible for normal regular menstrual cycles.
When women experience different types of stress or depression, the inner lining of the uterus becomes thin. This thin lining means that there is a delay in shedding the endometrial wall. This delay will cause the blood to oxidize and become discolored – often like brown spotting – this is brown spotting stress. Actually brown spotting stress is the stressful situation for endometrium – stressed from hormonal unusual fluctuations. Scientists discovered the correlation between chronic stress, irregular periods and brown spotting.
It was hypothesized that women with higher stress levels would be more likely to experience abnormal cycles and unexpected brown spotting stress. Many women after stress could have irregular periods and/or brown spotting instead of period, and/or irregular brown spotting.
So, if you have stress, better take care of it as soon as possible!
All body functions are regulated by the brain (mainly by hypothalamus) including regulation of female hormones, menstrual cycle and menstrual rhythms. Hypothalamus is actually sending signals for ovarian functions, uterus lining development, periods, etc. The hypothalamus also sends a signal to the uterus that prompts it to thicken its walls in case conception occurs and a pregnancy ensues. If pregnancy does not occur, the egg and uterine lining are shed during normal regular monthly periods.
Brown spotting stress
If women are experiencing stress (different types of stress) the whole hormonal cycle is becoming involved. The reason for this is that the area of the brain that is responsible for controlling the menstrual cycle is affected by stress and by hormones produced during the stress. Stress, whether it is caused by a dangerous situation, relationship problems, difficult work or other external factors, can create dramatic pressure on the menstrual system and be a reason for irregular unexpected brown spotting. It is happening because when the body is placed under stress, it secretes cortisol. This hormone diminishes the release of estrogen and progesterone, which are the hormones necessary for regular menstrual cycles to take place. Also, stress to the body in the form of poor nutrition alters the proteins in the brain, rendering the hypothalamus incapable of managing the release of an egg by the ovaries.
