Brown discharge after period

Brown discharge after late period

Late period can lead to brown discharge during and after period – in most cases it is related with the endometrial tissues (lining of the uterus which gives way to the menstrual bleeding during every period). Remains of the old endometrial tissues can lead to brown discharge – kind of cleaning process of the uterus by letting out the older tissues for newer ones.

Brown Discharge after period caused by endometriosis

Endometriosis is the growth of cells similar to those that form the inside of the uterus (endometrial cells), but in a location outside of the uterus. Endometrial cells are the same cells that are shed each month during menstruation. The cells of endometriosis attach themselves to tissue outside the uterus and are called endometriosis implants.

These implants are most commonly found on the ovaries, the Fallopian tubes, outer surfaces of the uterus or intestines, and on the surface lining of the pelvic cavity. They can also be found in the vagina, cervix, and bladder, although less commonly than other locations in the pelvis.

Endometriosis of vagina and/or cervix can be a reason for brown discharge before and/or after period combined with moderate or severe menstrual cramps.

Brown Discharge after period caused by “damage” of reproductive organs

Brown discharge after period can be a symptom of erosion, polyps and/or injury to the surface of the uterus and/or cervix.

Brown Discharge after period caused by infections

Sometimes the brown discharge after period could be caused by something more serious than just the sloughing off of the previous endometrial lining. Some vaginal infections and infections of the reproductive system could cause brown discharge after period:

  • Bacterial Infection
  • Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)
  • Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)
  • Vaginosis
