Brown smelly vaginal spotting is not common type of vaginal discharge women could complain. At the same time, brown spotting during menstrual flow is fairly common among women. Brown spotting at any time of menstrual cycle is most often associated with old endometrial tissues. In general, brown spotting is commonly a result of the long menstrual period – the long period means that the blood has become oxidized thereby causing the change in color.
Brown spotting sometimes could be a symptom of pregnancy, Pelvic Inflammatory Diseases (PID), premenopause, cervical cancer and some other medical conditions.
Brown smelly spotting is a signal of shedding of the uterine lining (“old shedding”) happened because of inflammation triggered by vaginal and/or uterine infections including sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).
Brown smelly vaginal spotting – causes
First of all, each young woman should know that normal physiological vaginal spotting is usually clear, creamy or very slightly yellow without unpleasant smell but could be very specific to each woman natural smell. The volume of normal vaginal spotting can be changed during different days of menstrual cycle. Any change of vaginal spotting should be alarming symptom for women.
It is normal for every woman’s vagina to have a unique smell – it is natural. But increased and/or “fishy” brown spotting in most cases is a symptom of vaginal and/or uterine infections:

- BV (Bacterial Vaginosis);
- Lack of hygiene or poor hygiene;
- Vaginal infection including sexually transmitted;
- Sexually transmitted trichomoniasis;
- Unusual infected object in vagina (sex toy or hygienic product);
- “Lost” tampon in vagina – infected old tampon;
- Recto-vaginal fistula;
- Cervical cancer.
