Anticancer red food

During last decades scientists have examined the relationship between food coloring and food activities in human body. It was noted that foods with similar colors have very similar functions in healthy diet. Nutritionists recommend to include in daily diet as much as possible bright colorful fruits and vegetables because they a full of natural disease-fighting phytochemicals. Special attention is paid to red foods which are packed with antioxidants and vitamins.

Antioxidants are substances that may protect cells from the damage caused by unstable molecules known as free radicals. Free radical damage may lead to cancer. Antioxidants interact with and stabilize free radicals and may prevent some of the damage free radicals might cause.

Scientists noted that antioxidants may slow or possibly prevent the development of cancer.

Anticancer red food help keep away cancer

Red cabbage
Cabbage is a unique source of several types of phytonutrients – its antioxidant activity is most likely due to its unusual polyphenol content. With red cabbage, these polyphenols include antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds called anthocyanins. Cabbage is also unique for it rich supply of glucosinolates. These phytonutrients can be converted by the body into isothiocyanates that have special detoxification and anticancer properties.

Pomegranates
Laboratory studies demonstrated anti breast cancer functions of pomegranates based on blocking a certain enzyme (aromatase) that converts androgen to estrogen.
Raw pomegranate and/or pomegranate juice may help prevent and slow the growth of some types of breast cancer. Recent studies discovered a group of phytochemicals in pomegranates which inhibited the growth of estrogen-responsive breast cancer in laboratory tests.

“Phytochemicals suppress estrogen production that prevents the proliferation of breast cancer cells and the growth of estrogen-responsive tumors”

Beets

Anticancer red food

Extract of red beetroot (beet juice) is a powerful and somehow delicious food for preventing cancer. Actually beetroots have been used as a treatment for cancer in Europe for centuries. Even back in the 20′s, German doctors Farberse and Schoenenberger were using it to help cancer patients. Beet juice helps to detoxify as well as protect our cells with much needed nutrients and oxygen. Beet juice has a powerful detoxifying effect and it increases oxygen within the blood by 400%.
Few laboratory studies noted suppression at multi-organ tumors by beet juice and presently some experts are considering using beets (extract of red beetroots) in combination with traditional anticancer drugs to reduce their toxic side effects.

Radishes
Researchers at Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University in India found that radishes induce apoptosis which means that they kill cancer cells. Furthermore, isothiocyanate antioxidant compound called sulforaphane found in radishes has a proven role in preventing prostate, breast, colon and ovarian cancers by virtue of its cancer cell growth inhibition and cyto-toxic effects on cancer cells.
High in antioxidants, radishes have been shown to help reduce the spread of breast cancer cells.

Tomatoes
Tomatoes contain a particularly high concentration of an effective antioxidant called lycopene, which is a cartenoid that helps give tomatoes a red color. A study in Nutrition and Cancer found that lycopene can stop endometrial cancer cell growth.
Some research has found that eating tomatoes may help protect men from prostate cancer. The juicy red tomatoes can help guard the DNA in your cells from damage that can lead to cancer.

Cherry
Rich in antioxidants, such as anthocyanin (believed to reduce pain and inflammation), cherries have been purported to fight myriad diseases, including diabetes, cancer, arthritis and gout. Cherries are also a good source of fiber, potassium and vitamin A.

Carrots
Carrots contain powerful cancer-busting chemicals – like kale and spinach, carrots pack carotenoids, an antioxidant group that may help prevent cancer.
Previous tests have shown the compounds can have beneficial effects in tackling inflammation and cancer. They were also found to reduce cancer growth in rats. Discover Carrot health benefits in chapter “Healthy food”.

Apples
“Apple a day – cancer away!” Several studies have specifically linked apple consumption with a reduced risk for cancer. The high level of antioxidants in apples is thought to help reduce cancer risk, with the skin of an apple containing five times the level of antioxidants as the flesh, so while you should wash apples, you shouldn’t peel them.
With its overwhelming load of powerful nutrients, antioxidants, fiber, and phytochemicals in every bite, the simple apple has been rising among nutritionists and scientists alike for its health potency – in addition, the apple peel has been shown to contain triterpenoids, compounds that possess strong anticancer activity, especially in preventing breast, colon, and liver cancer.

Grapes
Grapes may stop cancer cells – actually grapes contain natural chemicals that have the potential to stop the spread of cancer cells. Both grapes and grape juice are rich sources of resveratrol (natural phytochemical) – potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The skin of the grape contains the most resveratrol, and red and purple grapes contain significantly more resveratrol than green grapes.
In laboratory studies, resveratrol prevented the kind of damage known to trigger the cancer process in cell, tissue and animal models.
Red wine also contains resveratrol.

Chile pepper
“Hot chili peppers make cancer cells commit suicide”
Scientific studies show that natural substances found in chili peppers kill cancer cells by starving them of oxygen. Chile peppers contain high level of capsaicin (antioxidant) which may protect also blood vessels.

Sweet potatoes
Not to be confused with yams, the pink-skinned or purple versions of these are high in antioxidants. Orange flesh indicates beta carotene—shown to reduce breast cancer risk by as much as 25% when eaten regularly. And a Japanese study on rats showed that sweet potato extracts reduced existing breast cancer tumors, and held back the growth of new ones.
